The ice had been different. Really different, but it isn't like he knew what to expect from travel between universes.

At the moment, he was just glad he'd gotten as far into the hospital as he did before River began the usual.

His sister? Making a scene? Never.

This was just a... moment. A very upset, slightly paranoid, highly noticeable, and kind of loud moment.

"Don't worry, mei mei. No one is going to hurt you here. We're just going to see a doctor and then go back to Serenity."

Nope. Still digging her heels in, terrified and small and very much not about to get into the wheelchair someone had provided once they saw her protruding pillow-belly.

[ooc: Master is going to show up randomly at some point, so yeah.]

Cuddy was working her way through rounds when she was told of their arrival.

He'd managed to get her into the wheelchair after only a few minutes, but she was still clinging to one of his arms with both of hers.

Simon still couldn't help but look around at the hospital with a very critical eye, though.

The Master entered the waiting room, after lingering some time in the parking lot. He brought with him a smell of the cigarette he had been smoking. His ship was parked surreptitiously, and not far away - it had been disguised as a courtesy bus.

"River..."

He moved quickly to be by her side, without so much as a glance towards Simon.

"I could feel you from outside! You poor dear, it'll be all right now."

Simon didn't exactly look happy, but River seemed to have calmed a bit.

"Needles are everywhere and they do too many tests. It isn't the right gauge and the clouds keep coming back."

She had been worse before.

He dropped down to her level and stroked her hair.

"Shh, I'm here. They won't hurt you..." He looked up at Simon accusingly. "Will they?"

Her exaggerated belly may have been fake, but her emotions were terribly real. He reached out to her mind, tried to sooth it.

River let go of Simon's arm and clutched at the pillow under her shirt, instead.

"No one is going to hurt you, mei mei. I'm here."

He looked at Saxon and crossed his arms, standing up to his full height in an attempt to look impressive. Or, at the very least, not at all intimidated or surprised, which he was in equal parts.

"What are you doing here? I thought you said you had nothing to do with this."

Master stood and eyed Simon disdainfully. He kept one hand on River's shoulder.

"I don't, but River asked for me. I'm allowed to see her, yes?"

Between them, River muttered something under her breath about fights and how so much negativity was not good for the baby. Her brother's hand went protectively to her other shoulder.

The rest of Simon, however, held his ground.

"Well, there's not much I can do about it now, is there? But hey, you've seen her. I guess that means you can leave."

He leaned closer, inches away from Simon's face.

"I have just as much right to be here as you, and despite what you may think, she is capable of making her own decisions. She's asked for my presence, I came, and I will stay until she tells me to leave."

Simon leaned back a fraction from Master's face, but didn't otherwise move.

"You have no right to anything with my sister. If she wants you here, that's one thing, but don't think for a second that I would let you near her otherwise."

His hand twitched against her shoulder as he fought the urge to punch the man right there and then.

She felt like a sandwich, a rope with a tiny baby flag in the middle and she kept getting tugged back and forth. Hands on her shoulders and all these voices in her head.

Worried, desperate, sick, afraid, angry... The last one was the closest, the strongest, and it colored over all the others in a broad, uneven stroke.

"Stop it!"

Those clouds were clinging to her again and her belly lurched under the pillow.

"Knots are being frayed, noises like razors and you're too loud," she pleaded from behind a curtain of her hair, hands moving to her temples as she clenched her eyes shut. "Fall in the mud and it's the kind that won't wash out, erosion. Derision. Chaos? Be quiet or the flag won't think!"

Master's face softened considerably at the sound of River's voice. He glanced down at her and bit his lip.

"...Forgive me. And she's right," he sighed as he stepped back, but still kept his hand on her. "We're doing her no favors by fighting. Look, you can't make me leave, and I can't make you tolerate my being here. But we're both here for River, and... that's who we should worry about."

As soon as she had started, Simon was kneeling on the floor next to her, and the expression on his face when he looked to his sister was pained and desperate.

Different, then, from the expression he had when he looked up to the Master. That look was much more solid and determined.

"Fine," he said with just the slightest hint of a sneer on his lips before he went back to River. Always back to River, this time to try and coax her out of the little ball she'd curled herself into.

That sneer of Simon's might've earned him a good slap across the head if the Master wasn't trying to keep up appearances. Instead, he pushed down the urge and focused on River. He bent down slightly and brushed her hair aside, placed a hand over hers, and did what Simon never could; he went inside her mind, in an effort to calm her down.

I'm sorry, River. I won't fight anymore today. We only fight because we want to take care of you. Simon's brought you here to see what's going on inside your body, but no one will hurt you. I'm by your side, little sprout. Lean on me, unfurl towards the sun.

There it was, a push instead of a tug. Words that settled in to the cadence and she tilted her head sideways toward him, leaning gently into her own hand into his hand.

Keep voices down, swallow them back and sometimes they bubble up anyway. Xie xie.

River's feet eased out from under her, settling down again on the footrests and her back straightened a little but her arms stayed up. Her eyes were on the mussed lump in her lap.

I smushed it.

Her other hand moved down to smooth the crumpled pillow under her top, then went to rest on Simon's arm.

The Master smiled warmly and patted her stomach.

"You'll be all right," he murmured. He straightened up and ran a hand through his hair, glancing pointedly at Simon.

Yeah, that was an interesting development. Simon moved a hand to cover River's, then looked up at the Master.

"What did you do?"

For the most part, he didn't even try to hide the shock from his face.

"I was intuitive," he said in a patronizing tone. He was laughing on the inside.

Simon doesn't believe in our gifts, he thought to River. Pity he's so slow...

River glanced at Simon just as he made a face.

Not slow. Very fast, but in the wrong direction.

She straightened up completely then and let her head fall backwards. Checking the ceiling for something she couldn't remember.

"Turned around like a top, the compass doesn't work. North drifts and the sun changes destinations to suit different goals. Makes an unreliable source."

"River is going to have to drink some water so that we can get a better view."

River lifted her head slowly and looked to Cuddy.

"Just water? Not mixed or mashed? Nothing hidden inside to make me sleep?"

That might have been the tiniest bit of a worried pout to accompany the questions, but it was very small.

"Had to check. Sometimes they sneak it in with ants."

The Master chuckled a little to himself at her metaphor. He nodded to Cuddy.

"Ah, I suppose we haven't met. My name's Harry. So... you're giving her sonography, yes?"
