[RL with Kaylee and River] That just ain't right: Backdated to last night
Simon was pacing in the infirmary. Pacing, wringing his hands, running them through his hair, and then doing it all again.

Mutter, sigh, repeat.

His sister, however, was sitting calmly on the counter, cooing happily at the pillow-bump on her stomach and gently tapping those parrum-pum-pums on the lower cabinets with her heels.

"I'm going insane. That's the only other explination. This is all a delusion and I've gone completely insane."

After reading Simon's frantic messages on the community Kaylee hurried over to the infirmary. All of her rushing came to a halt when she reached to door and saw River inside and looking very...pregnant. With all the people saying they'd woke up pregnant it had all seemed like a joke, but now seeing the young girl on the couter it was no longer funny.

She turned her attention to Simon who she feared was going to wear a hole in the floor soon, or tear out all his hair until he was bald.

"Simon?" he said, attempted to gain his attention.

He stopped and looked around in the wrong direction. It took a second before he turned to where the door actually was, but when he saw Kaylee there he looked visibly relieved.

Not by much, mind, but at least she didn't look pregnant, too.

"Kaylee! She's," he gestured to River helplessly, "and, I don't know."

"Alright, alright," Kaylee said with a bit of a sigh. "First things first. You need to calm down. You pacin' round ain't going to do River any good."

She gave Simon stern look then walked over to River. "How you doin' there River?" she asked sweetly.

River smiled brightly up at Kaylee. Her 'belly' had a dent in it.

"Were clouds earlier, but they cleared," she said as she patted the pillow under her top. "Currently determining angles and curves for future reference. And Sun brought peppers!"

She pulled a stuffed jalapeño out of her pocket and began to munch on it.

On the other side of the room, Simon's face when white just before he buried it in his hands.

River sighed dramatically.

"Know how it didn't. Doesn't follow convention, contracted state of change and movement. There isn't a precedent."

She looked at Kaylee pointedly, then. "Tell Simon to leave Mister Saxon alone. Not his fault, and arguing isn't good for the baby."

"Convention was the last thing on my mind. You don't just get a belly like that over night," Kaylee pointed out. After River's last statement she eyed Simon and frowned.

"Don't tell me you think he did this?"

Simon frowned and crossed his arms defensively.

"He's the only one she's seen. Even before he came here, she snuck off and met him where he's from. Or, something. I think that's how it happened, but he's still the only one she's met."

On the counter, River was content to be quiet and fluff her belly to get the dent out.

"Might I remind you that River isn't the only one who this is happening to? Do you think he could have done this to everyone?" Kaylee turned, looking quite stubborn.

"I know we don't know much about Mr. Saxon, but you can't go around blamin' him without any proof."

She had a point, and he really didn't want to admit that it was just easier to blame him in lieu of dealing with his sister being in a family way.

Wait.

"Are you defending him?"

River rolled her eyes and moved to lay down on the counter.

"No, I am not defending him," she replied firmly. "But I'm not about to blame him either. Until there's proof, we can't be blamin' anyone."

"Besides," she said while she looked back at River. "Don't you think there are more important things to be worrying bout?"

"Simon is thinking in lines. Has to have precedent to follow or he gets lost."

River tapped against her lopsided pillow-belly and lifted her feet straight up into the air and looked at them seriously.

"There aren't breadcrumbs for this," she said as she pulled out another stuffed pepper and popped it into her mouth.

"Mmm," Kaylee said with a bit of a smile on her lips, but said nothing more on the topic of Simon.

"So have you been getting sick at all River?" she asked, though really if she was eating peppers, Kaylee doubted it.

"Sometimes. The clouds are more frequent, very thick and they stick to you and make balance a problem."

She wiggled her toes and Simon busied himself with organizing something in a drawer that really didn't need it.

"Alright, then you better take it easy and not walk around so much. At least not alone," Kaylee advised.

She found it odd to be the one taking care of the situation condsidering Simon was the doctor and not her, but given his state of...instability, it seemed up to her for the time being. She had helped out with a few women back home, but nothing back home was quite like this.

At least River didn't seem too upset about it all.

"So," she said, hoping up on the counter with River. "You haven't told the captain bout this yet have you?"

River nodded at the advice. "Walking will be done with care."

As for telling the captain, she looked up at Kaylee and simply said, "Nope," before looking back to her feet, reaching a hand up to pinch her big toe before letting her arm fall back against the pillow.

Kaylee sat, thinking for a few minutes. She knew the captain should know about something like this, but at the same time she didn't want everyone panikinng over the situation. And the truth was they didn't know what was going and they wouldn't be able to hide it for very long.

"Do you think we should tell him?" she asked Simon who still looked quite busy sorting things.

Oh, he was very busy sorting things that had already been sorted. It was very interesting, but the idea of telling Mal that his sister had gotten pregnant seemed a bit more pressing.

He turned around and avoided looking at either of them, instead picking a very interesting spot on the floor just to the side of Kaylee's feet.

"Probably, yeah. I mean, Jayne already knows, so it's only a matter of time..."

Simon let it trail off as he reached a hand up to scratch nervously at the back of his neck.

"Jayne knows? I'm surprised we don't have the whole crew down here already then," Kaylee said, surprised.

"Maybe it'd be better for the captain to hear it from you before Jayne then," she pointed out.

"Yeah, I think he's too busy laughing to actually tell anyone," Simon said with a bit of a grimace and then looked up at Kaylee.

"I'll tell him."

A pause.

"Well, I'll figure out how to tell him, and then, I'll tell him."

He didn't sound very confident, and River giggled at him.

"Just tell him straight," Kaylee suggested. "If anything he'll be just and freaked out as you are right now," she said and joined River in a giggle.

River laughed, sudden and short, and let her feet drop back down to the counter, her arms draped loosely over her stomach.

What, exactly, had made her laugh was up for debate.

"Act like it will be a monster, but it won't!" She looked at Simon, who was giving her his best look of disapproval.
